A temporary residence permit (TRP) is issued for three years

When the decision to grant a foreign national the temporary residence status in Russia has been made, a stamp to that effect is placed in his or her passport

The Russian Migration Service is required to make a decision on granting or refusing the temporary residence status within the following time frame*:
— six months for foreign nationals who need a visa to enter Russia
— two months for foreign nationals who do not need a visa to enter Russia

The TRP cannot be renewed

A temporary residence permit can be used as grounds for obtaining a permanent residence permit
* – however, in practical terms, there can be a long time lapse between the decision to grant a temporary residence permit and the actual receipt of temporary residence status by the foreign national.
